BULLY — “TOO TOUGH” MUSIC VIDEO
Director / Editor / Co-Shooter
The last in a video trilogy for a band that wanted a genuine 120 Minutes-era director to bring the vibes. I think we paid the salvage yard $100 for a couple of hours.
BULLY — “TRYING” MUSIC VIDEO
Director / Editor / Co-Shooter
A white whale for me: I wanted to make a music video inspired by Truffaut’s The 400 Blows. There are only two Rotor rides left in America, and after much consternation, I negotiated access to the one in Sylvan Beach, NY, before it opened for the season. Lots of Dramamine on this virtually crewless shoot.
HELIUM — “XXX” MUSIC VIDEO
Director / Editor
A true ’90s low-budget classic. Shot for almost nothing on short ends acquired by DP Mott Hupfel, who was then shooting SNL promos. Once it landed on Beavis and Butt-Head, Mary Timony’s face was suddenly on daytime MTV and Matador moved units.
THE FALL — “15 WAYS” MUSIC VIDEO
Director
Matador gave Mark E. Smith $10K to make a video, and he came back with unusable footage of himself as a video journalist. They needed something for 120 Minutes, so I was dispatched. I ran with the reporter theme and the fact that Smith needed to read the lyrics to lip-sync. He gave me very little time and spat at the camera. I was starstruck. R.I.P. to one of the great geniuses.
PELICAN — “DEAD BEHIND THE WALLS” (EXCERPT)
Director / Editor
Alt-metal instrumental for Hydra Head Records. An El Camino, the desert, a pit bull. The band thought the hitchhiking girl was too cheesy to make the cut. Shot on a Sony HDV camcorder with great glass by Brett Pawlak, who went on to shoot Spider-Man.
GUIDED BY VOICES — “AUDITORIUM / MOTOR AWAY”
Director
Another all-time genius. I shot this with Pollard and the Alien Lanes-era lineup during winter in Dayton, Ohio. The guy who rented us the tow trucks initially assumed he’d have to pay us $500 “to be on the MTV.” Highest level.
